만약에 내가 (사실은 경찰이 아니지만) 경찰인 척 경찰복도 구해서 입고 경찰처럼 보이면서 길거리를 돌아다닌다면, 사람들은 아마 내가 경찰이라고 생각할 거다.

이렇게 '~인 척 (행세) 하는' 것을 'pass someone/something off as something'이라고 한다. 보통 'pass oneself as something'의 형태로 많이 쓴다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'pass someone/something off as something'을 "to try to make others believe that someone or something is something other than what the person or thing is(누군가 또는 무엇을 그 사람 또는 그것이 아닌 다른 것이라고 타인이 믿게 만들려고 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Maurice is trying to pass himself off as a journalist to get admitted to the press conference(모리스는 저널리스트인 척해서 그 기자 회견장에 들어가려고 한다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'pass yorself off as someone'을 "in the sense of pretend to be(가장한다는 의미)"라고 설명했다.

"He tried to pass himself off as a doctor(그는 의사처럼 보이려고 했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'pass off'를 "to make people believe that a person or thing is something else(타인이 어떤 사람이나 사물이 다른 것이라고 믿게 만들다)"라고 풀이했다.

"He put on an old blue suit, intending to pass himself off as a businessman(그는 사업가 행세를 하려는 의도로 낡은 파란색 정장을 입었다)."

"The watches are fakes, but they tried to pass them off as genuine Rolexes(그 시계들은 가짜지만, 그들은 그것이 롤렉스 정품인 척하려고 했다)."
