[영어 공부] all hell breaks loose(큰 혼란이 일어나다, 아수라장이 되다)

 

우리말에서도 싸움이나 다른 일로 큰 혼란이 나는 걸 '아수라장'으로 변한다고 하는데, 영어에서는 이를 'all hell breaks loose'라고 한다.

아수라장이나 'hell(지옥)'이나 뭔가 비슷한 느낌이라 외우기 쉽다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'all hell breaks loose'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If all hell breaks loose, a situation suddenly becomes violent and noisy, especially with people arguing or fighting(all hell breaks loose 한다면, 특히 사람들이 말다툼하거나 싸우는 등, 상황이 갑자기 폭력적이고 시끄럽게 변하는 것이다) 

"One policeman drew his gun and then suddenly all hell broke loose(한 경찰이 총을 꺼내 들었고, 그러자 갑자기 아수라장이 되었다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'all hell breaks loose'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that all hell breaks loose, you are emphasizing that a lot of arguing or fighting suddenly starts(all hell breaks loose 한다고 말한다면, 갑자기 많은 말다툼 또는 싸움이 시작된다는 점을 강조하는 것이다)." 

"He had an affair, I found out and then all hell broke loose(그는 바람을 피웠고, 내가 그걸 알게 되자 아주 뒤집어졌다)."

맥밀란을 'all hell breaks loose'를 "used for saying that something happens that makes people angry or upset, and they start fighting or arguing(사람들을 화나게 하거나 속상하게 만드는 어떤 일이 일어나 그들이 싸우거나 말다툼을 하기 시작한다고 말하기 위해 쓰는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.

"All hell will break loose when my parents hear about this(우리 부모님이 이걸 아시게 되면 난리가 날걸)."
